History Of Our Annual Awards
< return to 2002-2003 awards

The Eugene Livingston Award
Eugene Livingston, a retired Institute employee, built our Extended Work Adjustment Program into one of the most highly regarded and successful programs in the Midwest. The program provides temporary and long-term employment for 260 adults with disabilities. The award recognizes a client who has demonstrated the motivation, determination and commitment to excellence required to achieve his or her highest potential. The honoree has acted as a role model to his or her peers by exhibiting a high level of attendance, cooperation and attention to quality of assigned jobs and has a “work personality” that enhances the overall work environment.

Business Partner Award
A newly created honor, this award recognizes a corporation that has helped advance The Institute’s mission through a business relationship. The award recognizes the efforts of those who have provided employment opportunities for our patients or clients; provided work to the our Extended Employment Program (The Rehabilitation Institute Industries); collaborated with us on a special project or program; and/or provided leadership in the community which promotes/provides employment options for persons with disabilities.

Community Partner Award
This new honor recognizes an individual, public entity or organization that has collaborated with us to improve services opportunities and outcomes for persons with disabilities. The award honors the efforts of those who have gone the extra mile to assist in the implementation of a special project, program or service at The Institute. They have also demonstrated compassion to those we serve and commitment to helping us achieve our mission.

Jane Froman Award
Since 1974, The Rehabilitation Institute has honored one of its patients with the Jane Froman Award. Created to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of Jane Froman, the Missouri singing star whose career spanned more than 50 years, including an outstanding comeback after a near crippling plane crash during a World War II USO tour. The award recognizes a former or current patient of The Rehabilitation Institute who has demonstrated remarkable courage and perseverance throughout the rehabilitation process.

Oscar Nelson Award
The Oscar D. Nelson award is given annually to an individual, business or organization whose actions emulate the spirit, generosity and philosophy of Oscar Nelson. Oscar was an executive of Butler Manufacturing and dedicated his life to helping children and adults faced with adversity. He showed his commitment by serving as an active volunteer and advocate for persons with disabilities. He was a president of The Institute’s first board of directors and he was chairman of the building fund that made possible the construction of The Institute’s present home. He gave generously of his resources and time.
