What should I look for when choosing a rehabilitation facility?

I am having trouble coping with changes that I have experienced since my illness/injury, what can I do?

• Coping with the sudden changes following injury is normal. Neuropsychology Services and ongoing support groups are available. Contact:

Will my insurance cover your program costs?

• Insurance coverage varies depending on individual plans. Contact:

What are your hours of operation? Are you open weekends and holidays?

• Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Observed holidays are New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the Day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Do you have an inpatient unit?

• We do not have an inpatient unit. Please contact Marcella Choate, admissions director, at (816)751-7783 or marcella.choate@rehabkc.org for possible resources.

What ongoing support services do you provide?

• Ongoing support services are available to families and clients with our monthly support groups. Contact:
Michele Tietz at (816)751-7856 or michele.tietz@rehabkc.org for information related to the Adult TBI Support Group;

Janet Padley at (816)751-7827 or janet.padley@rehabkc.org for information related to the Adolescent Support Group; or

Do you have a peer support program?

• We have not formally provided a peer support program. However, arrangements for individuals to have peer support can be made on a case-by-case basis.

Where is The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City located?

• Our main location is at 3011 Baltimore, Kansas City, MO 64108. View Maps. We have satellite locations for Employment Services in St. Joseph, Warrensburg and Independence, Missouri.

What should I bring with me on my first day of service?

• On your first day, please bring your insurance card, prescription and co-payment, if applicable. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of your program as the admissions process may to take fifteen minutes or more to complete.

I want to drive again, do you have a Driver’s Evaluation and Training Program?

• Yes, we have the only Driver’s Evaluation and Training Program offered in the Kansas City area. We also provide these services in Warrensburg, Springfield and St. Joseph, MO. What are my rights and responsibilities as a client?

• As a participant in employment services at The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City, you have the right to:

• Respect and considerate treatment.
• Access to scheduled services without regard to race, color, religion, culture, national origin, disabling condition or source of payment for your services.
• Sensitivity to your religious and cultural beliefs.
• Prompt response to your requests for services.
• Complete information that you will need to make decisions regarding your program.
• Frequent communication with the staff involved in your program, especially with the person coordinating your program.
• Active participation in planning your program.
• Refuse services and receive information regarding the possible consequences of your actions.
• Confidentiality with all communications and records related to your program.
• Include other people of your choice to help you make decisions related to your program.
• Knowledge about research projects involving program participants and the right to refuse to participate.
• Explanation of financial matters related to your program, regardless of the source of payment for your services.
• Explanation of the rules and regulations that apply to your participation in the program.
• Protection from abuse and neglect, of any kind, involving the staff of the Institute. Every effort will be made to protect you from such treatment by others while on the premises of the Institute.
• Freedom to voice concerns, needs and questions to staff without fear that it will negatively affect your program.
• Information about other organizations that may provide advocacy or other services.
• Efforts to ensure your personal safety while on the premises of the Institute.

As a program participant, you have the following responsibilities:

• Provide complete information requested by staff and related to your program. That may include medical, social, psychological, educational and vocational history. If changes occur, please let us know as soon as possible.
• Inform staff about accommodations, cultural issues or other beliefs that are important to consider in planning your program.
• Participate actively in developing your program.
• Comply with the program plan we develop together or if you disagree, discuss your needs with the staff person responsible for coordinating your program.
• Accept responsibility for your decisions and consequences if you refuse services or don’t follow the agreed upon plan.
• Follow the rules and regulations explained to you and outlined in the participant handbook.
• Be considerate of others including personal safety and freedom from abuse of any kind.

What types of disabilities do you serve?

What is the criteria for admission into your programs?

• For admission to Outpatient Medical Services, the individual served must:

• Have a diagnosis of a developmental disability, illness or injury resulting in a change in their previous daily function activity status.
• Have a reasonable expectation for greater functional independence, the ability to achieve goals and show progress.
• Have the potential to comprehend and cooperate with the plan of care and be medically stable.

• For admission to Employment Services, the individual served must:

• Be at least 14 years of age (some work settings require that participants be at least 16).
• Be able to care for their personal needs or direct such services (if provided by a personal assistant that they employ or is provided by a funding source).
• Possess sufficient emotional control and pose no physical threat either to themselves or to others.

Are you able to assist with transition to school and/or work?

• Yes, the focus of Community Integration and Employment Services is for successful transition to school or work.

Who qualifies for Employment Services?

• Adults and high school students at least 14 years of age with a disability that impacts their activities at home, school or place of employment benefit from our Employment Services.

What services do you offer?

• Career Counseling and Assessment provides options designed to help individuals assess their employment potential and develop a plan that matches their abilities, needs and interests.
• Work Transition Services helps high school students with disabilities develop a plan for post-secondary employment or training that matches their interests, abilities and needs.
• Job Placement Services are designed to help job seekers find and maintain employment that matches their abilities, needs and interests.
• Adaptive Computer and Communication Technology Services are designed to help individuals determine and use appropriate assistive technology tools that may improve functional abilities for physical, sensory, cognitive or communicative limitations.
• Consulting Services provide vocational reintegration services to adults whose injuries or disability impacts their employment.
• Organizational Employment is extended employment and supportive rehabilitation services for persons at least 16 years of age who are unable to work in the competitive labor market.

How do I enroll for Employment Services?

• Various local, state and federal agencies are the funding source for participants in the programs offered by the Institute’s Employment Services. To find out if you qualify contact Mary Henry, employment services coordinator mary.henry@rehabkc.org.
